However, he eventually turned Villa’s fortunes around and added an FA Cup final appearance — where they lost 4-0 to Arsenal — to Premier League survival.
Despite bringing in 12 new players in the summer, reportedly spending over £50 million in the process, Sherwood’s side have managed to pick up just four points from a possible 30 this season, their last league win coming against Bournemouth on the opening day.
Assistant manager Ray Wilkins, first-team coach Mark Robson and performance analyst Seamus Brady have also left the club with Kevin MacDonald taking over as manager in the interim.
